Monotheism seems to have emerged to reflect the greater concentration of power in social hierarchies. Monotheism emerged from henotheism and monolatry, as in Egypt, Assyria, Persia, and Canaan. The more powerful the human dictator, the greater the ruler’s temptation to become a deranged narcissist and solipsist. To say that the mindset of a one-and-only God would be one of peace, love, and wisdom strikes me as ludicrous. We have only to look at how human dictators behave to see what the monotheist’s God would be like.
