Modernity hardly guarantees utopia. I think science, skepticism, freedom of thought, capitalism, and democracy are good compared to the alternatives, but I've criticized them too. For instance, I did a series criticizing neoclassical economics, and I've criticized scientism and naïve theories of objective truth. I've criticized consumerism and the fragility of democracy. But would you rather live in a free country or in an Arab theocratic dictatorship? I suspect that far more Arabs would prefer to live in a free society than free people who would prefer to live anywhere in the Muslim world.
