Medium's rules say you're not supposed to do that, so there's a catch-22 at work. You can't become a very popular writer on Medium by literally selling things with spam or ads, but once you win the lottery and gain all of those readers, you might be able to break the rules. But you might need to have already sold those things to become very popular on Medium, to gain that attention.

I have books I could be trying to sell on Medium, but I follow the rules as I understand them. That's why I don't have tens of thousands of Medium followers and why nice guys finish last.
