Life is certainly biologically driven to preserve itself, but whether that's metaphysical, or whether that purpose is built into physics or the very mathematical structure of natural reality is the question at issue. Saying it's a God-given purpose begs the question since the Darwinian account of life's evolution doesn't require that projection of human qualities onto the natural foundations.
