Just on the issue of Native Americans, about which I don't know much, I recently came across a mind-blowing interpretation in The Dawn of Everything. The authors there argue that the indigenous North Americans were the true originators of Enlightenment humanistic philosophy, reflecting indeed the likely outlook of most prehistoric hunter-gatherers who saw through the dangers and the scam of settled, hierarchical society.
