Just a thought on what you say in the first paragraph. The transcendent God that isn’t supposed to have our nature, such as the God of Gnosticism or really the God of any of the monotheistic religions — when understood philosophically rather than exoterically — does have a function. The effect of worshiping an alien God is to fear that supreme power, to humble yourself before it, to use that God as a symbol and assurance of our ultimate insignificance. That’s quite different from flattering ourselves by worshiping something similar to us.
