I've written some articles on just that point, about the existential difference between life's stages.

Teens are known for being "anxious," but that's because they're forced to confront the existential dimension. Adulthood usually shuts that down by assigning us social responsibilities that preoccupy us. And then retirement comes too late and we'll have been used up, sacrificed for the collective good.
