I've written a long series on what I take to be the essence of modern conservatism. I agree that conservatives are more fervent about promoting their agenda than are liberals. Indeed, liberalism and democracy are in decline around the world.

However, the essence of conservatism is also unspeakable and anachronistic, so conservatives must excel in lying to sell it. In effect, conservatism is medievalism and social Darwinism, so it has to do with re-establishing primitive norms (sexism, racism, sadism, dominance hierarchies, authoritarian prejudices) rather than spiritual values.
