It's not so obvious what consciousness could be if we strip all personality, memory, and ego from it, other than a container in which everything more definite can appear. Wouldn't that be the form of consciousness, that is the concept of consciousness or of qualia as what it's like to be in a mental state?
If the consciousness we all share is more personal, wouldn't that underlying self be more like some people than others? Would this divine self have the personality of ascetics rather than, say, of politicians? Or is this an alien self that's unlike any human? If so, how would we know that contacting this alien self wouldn't be a matter of mental illness?
Have you seen the movie Saint Maud? I saw it recently and it has some disturbing relevance to this discussion (as do some similar movies, like Breaking the Waves and The Last Temptation of Christ).
