It's funny how Eric Voegelin said that Gnosticism is secretly America's functional religion. It's pretty clear, rather, that neoliberalism or runaway capitalism is so. It's that social Darwinism that accounts for the corruption of economists and medical care. It's the worship of money and the ego, and the fear that there's no more satisfying alternative in the modern world (in which God is dead and so on).
