It's also Walter Kaufmann's point, and it's about the meaningfulness of language. Just because a linguistic expression is metaphorical doesn't mean the metaphor ought to be meaningless or obscure. Some metaphors are incoherent, wishy-washy, and vacuous.

But Matthew would likely appeal here to the transcendence of theophanies or other peak states of consciousness or religious experiences.
