It's a good question, and I expect the answer is mixed: some cynicism/corruption and some Confucian pragmatism.

You're sort of painting Islam with a broad brush. There are certainly virulent forms of the religion, such as Wahhabism which Saudi Arabia has propped up. But banning things rubs me the wrong way. It looks cowardly.
