It seems you're suggesting there's a lot of deception or marketing going around, which must mean there's a lot to hide from each other and from ourselves. This is a theme of existentialism, namely bad faith or inauthenticity. Ever since Plato, many philosophers have dismissed the vulgar opinions of the masses who are caught up in what the Eastern religions call Maya, the world of illusions.
But what we fear in the case of religion and capitalism, of course, is that the truth is the opposite of what's sold to us. No one likes to be scammed. If there's no God or afterlife at all; if the minority of huge winners depends on the majority's huge losses (as in any race which has such a ratio); and if the rich are corrupted by their luxuries and dominance, and made undeserving of their wealth, no one can live in such societies without befouling themselves. Advertising is a filthy business, but so is being a consumer who's subjected to hundreds of ads (lies) a day.
