It seems like the conflict between Trumpians and progressives, or between domineering men and women (over history). There's a key inequality which is that all the ferocious energy is on the side that's in the wrong, while the other side has all the reason in the world to revolt but can't because it's too civil. That civility is why the righteous side is exploited and abused in the first place. So I see the irony continuing to play out: sanctimonious theists will keep flaunting their absurdities, and secular humanists will keep carrying their cross, as it were, tolerating the inanities. It's inconceivable that atheists will ever have much explicit representation in the American government, and anyway the liberal Constitution allows for those inanities. Clamping down on religion would require a shift towards leftist authoritarianism.
