It might be a Sophie's choice then, since Western civilization is at the forefront of the biosphere's destruction. So if we keep "progressing," what will we be replaced with? It would be a choice between postapocalypse and anti-Western, authoritarian values such as Russian, Chinese, or Taliban ones.
