It is intriguing to think that scientific naturalism is just another theology, one we take for granted the way every religious population holds its creed to be beyond reproach. Science and modernity generally, though, are different in that they replace gods with us. The scientific ethos isn't theistic but humanistic. So science drives our war against the wilderness. The chief test of scientific truth is whether the model helps us control nature by predicting the future. As David Hume showed, there's faith in that secular enterprise, too, but it differs from the old-fashioned, childlike theistic kind.
