It is indeed a theme that goes back to my earlier writings on my blog, before I started writing on Medium in 2019 (see the bottom links for some relevant articles on my old blog). I have gone into what I mean my "monstrous nature," in several articles. Generally, the point is to deal with the Nietzschean take on philosophical naturalism, via something like Lovecraft's cosmicism which verges on existentialism.
The question at issue is whether the upshot of scientific discoveries is consistent with a progressive view of history, or whether the death of God is socially catastrophic. If it's the latter, we cope either by distracting ourselves or by falling for uplifting secular myths, or else by enlightening ourselves, and overcoming our fears with existential insights. Does nature appear innocent, given atheistic naturalism, or monstrous and alien to our social sensibilities (and vanities)? The metaphor/model is a fertile way of challenging our humanistic complacency in a godless universe.
