It does make sense because, according to the gospels, Jesus thought the world was going to end soon, so there would be no need to perpetuate the species for much longer. That's why his ethics were so extreme, because he thought we had to redouble our efforts to impress God, given the nearness of Judgment Day.
Read Matthew 12: 46-50 in which Jesus disowns his biological family in favour of his cultic one (his Christian fellowship).
All of this may come as a surprise because Christianity has been linked with "family values" in the American context. And of course the world (or the reign of humanity) didn't end as expected.
