Interesting. So you were somewhat sympathetic to the Rajneeshees at the time. Did you get a sense that the natives' hostility was because they were opposed to dangerous cults or because they were racist and xenophobic, and they demonized outsiders on a twisted Christian basis?

It's intriguing how the Rajneeshees used American laws as cover to try to practice their religion, just like the early European settlers of America did. But the laws don't quite work the same way since Christianity has become the de facto established religion in parts of the country: Mormonism in Utah, Evangelicalism in the Deep South, and so on.

It's interesting how the cult of Scientology, though, got protection from US law, specifically from the IRS.
