The point about the foundational emotions is that some are associated with the recognition of our existential situation. One reason to emphasize them is that happiness-driven culture does the opposite. We're supposed to always think on the bright side or to repress negative emotions. That's fine for drudges or pawns, but the question is whether these dupes make for existentially authentic people.
