Indeed, the weaknesses of a free society were plain to the elitists Plato and Aristotle since a free society can cannibalize itself via parasitic demagogues. We tolerate cancers like Trump which convert the free society into a tyranny of the minority. The trick, I suppose, is to limit public freedoms without engendering blowback from those who think negative liberty is a panacea.
