Indeed, the problem, I think, is politically motivated, artificial centrism. It's a politically correct stopping short of the fullest philosophical or scientific scrutiny to preserve certain illusions. This is deconstruction for the masses. In this case, these liberal Christians want to feel at home in secular liberal society, but they don't want to give up entirely their archaic Christianity. So they water down both of them to make them compatible with each other.
