Indeed, the capitalist economy is supposed to take on much of the load of big decision-making. We do what the market demands, if we're self-interested. But capitalism is another facet of modernity. There's freedom of thought (science), freedom to buy and to sell (capitalism), and political freedom (democracy). My larger point is whether the hype for modernity conflicts with the results, necessitating secular hypocrisy. Obviously, science isn't solely responsible for everything that's wrong with the modern world. But scientists play a role in some of those harms.
