Indeed, that’s so.

I’ve argued that exoteric, literalistic theism, the kind that takes seriously our anthropomorphic metaphors applied to fundamental reality, may even psychologically prime us to accept the animalistic default social order of oligarchy and the dominance hierarchy. If we can be trained so that we long to be slaves to God, to the all-powerful tyrant, surely we won’t be so appalled by the prospect of living in the meantime under human masters who are supposed to represent the gods or who at least are far more godlike than the average, hapless peon.
