Indeed, Manchin is being scapegoated, but the entire Democratic Party is “centrist” rather than progressive, which is to say that the Democrats have been corporatized since at least the 1990s. Big change will have to come from outside the government, from social movements that force politicians to act against their narrow self-interest. Unfortunately, the social movement that’s most likely to affect the US government in the foreseeable future is Trumpism.
