In my earlier comment, I was saying I was "referring to modern philosophy which builds on the best from ancient Greece and Rome." So I implied that the ancient world had a positive column, too, as it were, namely the philosophy, protoscience, and legal principles the modern world built on, for example. The Italian Renaissance and the Enlightenment built on ancient Greco-Roman humanism and skepticism, bypassing the Dark Age of medieval Christendom.
