In a real post-catastrophe environment, one other role philosophers should undertake is explaining why life is still meaningful. Of course, most folks would be preoccupied with surviving as quasi-animals. Philosophy would be a luxury they couldn't afford. But eventually, if society is to be rebuilt, someone would have to frame the new mythos or ideology, the cultural foundation that inspires the survivors to cooperate, despite the gross failures that would have led to the collapse.
