I'm talking about the "hard problem" (as it's called in philosophy) of explaining how qualia fit in a universe of objects.

Indeed, we're immediately familiar only with our subjective, first-person perspective. So why would any physical thing have such a perspective? That's the hard problem.

If qualia were just brain states, and this were "exactly" like how software runs on a computer, why aren't all computers conscious?
