I'm talking about relative intelligence, comparing what people and animals can figure out. People have the advantage of a relatively autonomous, linguistically-powered imagination. Individuals may get lazy, relying too much on the collective imagination in our cultures (such as by relying on smartphones), but the contrast is still striking with animals. Animals often fall back on instincts and reflexes, rather than on their powers of deduction.
