I'm sure there are degrees of this in science. For one thing, the motives of many individual scientists may not align with the function of their institutions. This would mean the scientists are dupes, to some extent. But clearly, an institution can serve more than one function. Science supplies us with empirical knowledge which acts like a tool that can be used for various purposes. But when I look at history, I see these overall patterns. One thing that unites science is a humanistic, progressive culture which seems to require an imperial stance towards nature.
