I'm not saying religious and secular societies are identical or are alike in all respects. But the similarities are often overlooked.
Consumerism would be the practice of secular ideology, just as religions have their creeds and their practices (rituals, etc).
Certainly, secular society is more driven by reason. But there are also civic religions and secular myths that test our patriotic faith. There's a functional, sociological similarity between the structure of these societies or institutions.
