I'm not hostile to conservative as people, since each of them will be different. I'm hostile to conservatism as a self-defeating ideology.

We also have to distinguish between the conservative instinct which everyone has, including liberals, and the political philosophy of conservatism. We all instinctively protect ourselves or are afraid of what's new, to some extent. Conservatives may have those instincts to a greater extent than liberals.

But in so far as conservatives say they're skeptical about technoscientific progress, what I suspect really animates that fear is their subservience to some archaic creed. It's authoritarianism that drives most of them, and skepticism is just the rhetorical cover, as it was for Burke.
