I'm interested in your distinction between public and private Protestantism, since this might challenge my account of liberalism and conservatism. After doing a little reading on Puritanism and Presbyterianism, I don't see much of a theological basis for any public-private split. Is the emphasis on public demonstrations supposed to align with what Max Weber said about the compatibility between Protestantism and the capitalist work ethic? And could the emphasis on privacy have to do more with the Scottish ethos?
