I'm an atheist regarding the exoteric, toy models of God that predominate in mainstream theistic religions, and I'm a pantheist in my philosophical interpretation of scientific knowledge. I've had plenty of conversations with religious people. I've posted some long ones on Medium (links below).
If a T-Rex appeared around the corner, we would piss our pants. That's monster enough for me. Animals can be monstrous, as can humans (as in psychopaths). But I grant you that human monsters are worse than the worst animals.
If time isn't real, theism is empty since God wouldn't be a person with mental states that change. But if we're real enough, so is time on pragmatic grounds. So my dinosaur argument would count against mainstream religions' sentimental conception of God's personality.
