My view is that Trump has exploited longstanding resentments against neoliberalism and the establishment, and created a neofascist, authoritarian cult. More psychologically, the Trump fans are using Trump's mental disorder as a symbol to avenge themselves by humiliating and burning down the secular country they resent (largely on racist and Evangelical "Christian" grounds).
In short, Trumpism is a massive case of trolling. Liberals and progressives fall right into it because they're slow on the uptake and they're too civilized and sophisticated to see what's happening. They're not nearly cynical enough.
