If the conflict is between genes and intelligence, that's an indirect way of saying the conflict is between nature and us since the genes are part of natural selection, whereas intelligence is part of human autonomy. Yes, nature creates everything, including intelligent reasoning. But personal autonomy emerges in that nature puts us on a long leash. That's what I'd argue anyway. (I'm a compatibilist regarding free will.)
