If criticisms of articles or of arguments were all equivalent to personal attacks on the author, what would be the point of positing the separate fallacy of the personal attack, known in logic and in critical thinking as the "ad hominem"? If you don't understand the difference between a person and an article, or you don't realize that you can address one rather than the other, you really should go back to school.
Of course, you're just projecting since you can't help but ape the protagonist of your beloved New Testament and accuse everyone of "dishonesty" and "vanity." What you forget is that if that's all Jesus did, namely attacking his critics, he'd hardly have been remembered as a heroic individual. What you're missing are the humility, the selflessness, and especially the enlightenment.
