I'd like to be talking about core Buddhism, which I take to be early, Theravada Buddhism. For instance, I'm writing something soon on the conflict between humanism and the Dhammapada.

I suppose it's controversial, though, to speak of a core of Buddhism, as though all the later adaptations were dispensable. Obviously, the later Buddhists would say their adaptations were needed because of weaknesses in the early sources and practices.
