I wasn't exactly trying to write a word-for-word imitation of an ancient gnostic text. But the dialogue is somewhat gnostic in spirit in that it follows the Gnostics' reversal of expectations when it came to biblical characters such as Yahweh and the serpent in Eden. Of course, the Gnostics also often took Jesus to be a heroic revealer, whereas in my dialogue he's a foil for Satan. I suppose I was trying to one-up the Gnostics. (Technically, though, Jesus is the hero in my dialogue since Satan is only a character in his fevered imagination, so he's reaching the deeper truth himself in the desert.)
