I was trying to say in the article that there's a self-serving notion of progress, which is that we progress if we just keep doing what we're doing, regardless of whether what we're doing is good. In the same way, the Nazis were "progressing" in the earlier part of WWII, when they conquered more and more territory, and a serial killer "progresses" by killing more and more innocent persons.

To get to a more moral idea of progress, we have to wade through the meta-ethical debate, which is a minefield.
