I was thinking of something like Kohlberg's stages of moral development. Clearly, morality is based on social instincts which we have in common with other social animals. It's the universal, humanistic perspective, though, that seems more cultural than genetic. Our genes limit us, but cultures program our minds, too, and cultures are often quite unnatural in featuring sheer fictions. That's a bootstrapping mechanism for making us anomalous, godlike persons rather than animals.
