I understand the history, but words change their meaning over time. If the word carries too much conservative baggage, then I agree the label wouldn't be worth the trouble (since conservatism is untenable). I think matters are currently in flux in the culture war. In any case, I speak also of left-wing decadence, political correctness, infantilization, etc. So my arguments don't depend on that label.
