I think you answered your own question: it’s the navel-gazing. Even more conspicuous is academic philosophy’s lack of focus on the social impact of technology. I think Yuval Harari makes this point about how technology is finally raising big philosophical questions, giving us godlike power and revolutionizing society (capitalism, democracy, etc), but philosophers are AWOL on the public stage. They’ve been replaced by social scientists and amateurs, thanks to the internet which gives us all a stage.
