I think we're driven by certain realizations, ideals, prejudices, and so on, and some motives are nobler than others. We might be enslaved to our social systems, too, or else we adapt to these artificial niches. But civilization results from or at least reinforces an existential clash which testifies to our autonomy, as in our freedom from the wilderness.
