I think the early Christians were pretty mystical and otherworldly too, so in that respect they're closer to the Eastern Church. But the early Christians were also progressive, given their countercultural critiques. It's just that they expected God to do all the social reformations, and God never showed up in any apocalyptic sense. So the Western Church has supposedly been acting on God's behalf or in lieu of divine judgment.
