I think the drive for linear progress is also about liberating us from natural cycles. The Promethean vision is to transcend nature, to become godlike singularities or creators of worlds. We can't do that if we're just cogs in an ecosystem. That's the antagonism towards nature that's built into both religious and secular humanism, as I see it.
