I think that's the more enlightened interpretation of the meaning of Christianity. It's spooky, then, how official Christianity, especially in the West, has been systematically opposed to that interpretation. This is a secretive, oppressive religion that's been a blight on history and that would have horrified Jesus. Dostoevsky's Grand Inquisitor parable makes the crucial distinction here between what works spiritually for the individual, and what works politically for the collective.

I don't know much about the Maya, but I doubt they were saintly. They waged war and practiced human sacrifice. Maybe on the whole, though, they were more saintly and enlightened than the Western Christian collective. If so, the Grand Inquisitor's argument might seem specious.
