I think that would be a wiser course for religionists, and it's what they may often try to do--until they can no longer overlook their theological differences, whereupon they undermine their more pressing mission. It's farcical because it's tribal.

Moreover, most of these religionists have dual loyalties. They're not true believers and they welcome secular progress.
