I think Nietzsche makes the most sense when viewed as one of the rare conservatives who said the quiet part out loud (like Carl Schmitt and Joseph de Maistre).
The group mind theory would imply that we've supported transhumanism all along. Society as an emergent collective would have been ruling over individuals in perhaps Kafkaesque fashion for thousands of years. Lewis Mumford called this the megamachine.
Still, the transhuman's technological thesis is about the individual's transformation, because this kind of progress is Western and individualistic.
