I think John Milton's line about Hell being a mental state would be relevant:

"The mind is its own place, and in itself Can make a heav’n of hell, a hell of heav’n. What matter where, if I be still the same...?"

So Larry would have made his prison life a Hell too, by finding much to complain about.
